Bocoup is trying something new! We’re launching an opportunity to build a free prototype for you or your organization. We want to ensure that funding is not a barrier to entry to get new ideas out into the world, and we believe prototypes can open doors.

Who is Bocoup?

Bocoup partners with tech companies, nonprofits, and other institutions on projects that promote a more just digital landscape for all users. We look for alignment with our values in our project selection process. Check out our recent work here.

What’s a prototype?

A prototype is the simplest thing we can build to validate an idea and test it with people who might use it. Robert’s App, is an example of a prototype we recently built with a partner. Robert’s App is an assistive technology designed to help nonverbal autistic kids communicate their needs. We worked with a founder who is starting a company around this concept, and she is currently testing the prototype with her community and using it to secure funding.

Why might a prototype with Bocoup be the right next step for you?

• You have an idea that you want to raise funds for or further develop.
• You think your idea would benefit from some testing and iteration.
• You’re interested in exploring ideas around accessible, consentful, and inclusive user flows in your product.

Who should apply to the Free Prototype Program?

• A startup or founder who wants to fundraise
• An established company who is looking to experiment
• A community organization or nonprofit that wants to test a new idea
• Anyone who aligns with the criteria above!

What could the prototype scope be?

Together, we will agree on what will constitute a functional prototype for your needs and build that. Some potential features include:

• Forms, data collection, and display
• User accounts
• Role-based permissions
• File uploading
• Transactional emails, like account verification using Sendgrid
• Static marketing website
• Responsive design (to work on mobile, tablet, desktop)
• Accessible design (to work with assistive technologies like screen readers)
• Privacy design (to include data access and deletion flows)

Have an idea that doesn’t quite fit these categories? Don’t be shy! We love challenging opportunities to innovate and problem-solve together, and we are eager to learn more through your application.

Are there any strings attached?

The prototype will be yours to do with as you please! The only thing we ask is that you allow us to talk about our work together. If you like working with us and get funding to take the prototype forward one day, we’d love to continue building with you. However, developing this prototype with us doesn’t mean you have to work with us in the future.
