Interop is turning 4 this year! (Well, 5 actually if you count its inception as Compat 2021). Browser interoperability remains an important value for us at Bocoup. We view interoperability as an essential counter to monopolization of the web. Interoperability makes the web more accessible and inclusive for all. In 2024, the collective efforts of the many web and browser developers brought us to a whopping 97% interop score (up from 95% in 2023 and 85% in 2022)!
The Interop process has an arguably even longer origin story that begins with the creation of the Web Platform Tests – the test suite for the web platform, cooperatively managed by representatives from major browser vendors and the members of the W3C. You can read more about WPT and Bocoup’s involvement in our recent historical overview of how WPT came to be.
Bocoup is excited to continue investing time and effort to furthering browser interoperability in 2025. This year saw the introduction of a more rigorous “championing” process among Interop participants to help us select focus areas with even more intention than we have in the past. Participating organizations have limited resources to continue moving the needle in any given focus area from year to year. As has been the case in past years, the participating organizations’ available resources strongly informs the selection process.
This year, Bocoup decided to focus on a smaller set of investigation areas than we have in the past, which will be in lockstep with our consulting work for the coming year. The areas we championed for selection this year include renewed commitments to the Accessibility & Mobile Testing Investigation Areas. We are also very excited to be on the ground floor of a new Privacy Investigation Area initiative that will be starting this year, where we aim to bring more interoperability into the major advances in web privacy and anti-tracking technologies of the recent years.
You can see the full list of this year’s focus areas plus the collaborative’s progress on making them interoperable at the Interop 2025 dashboard.
